The questions we hear most often, answered plainly.
- Can you climb El Castillo?
- No. Climbing the pyramid has been prohibited since 2006, both to protect the ancient stones and after a fatal accident. Any climbing attempt will be stopped by site staff.
- How much are tickets?
- Around £35 per adult in total (federal and Yucatán state fees combined). Children under 13 pay less; Mexican residents pay a reduced rate and enter free on Sundays.
- Do I need a guide?
- Not required, but strongly recommended for a first visit. Licensed guides wait at the entrance; agree a price before starting. Group tours from Cancún include a guide by default.
- Is it safe to visit?
- Yes. Chichén Itzá is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world and is well policed. The main risks are heat and dehydration, not crime.
- What is the weather like?
- Hot and humid year-round. November to March is the cooler, drier season. April to October is hotter, with afternoon showers common in the summer months.
- How long should I spend at the site?
- Two to three hours is enough to see the main structures at an unhurried pace. Add extra time if you want to combine the visit with a cenote swim.
- Can I fly a drone?
- No. Drones are not permitted without a specific INAH permit, which is difficult and expensive to obtain.
